1. The speed of download is extremely slow. Why am I getting poor throughput ? While downloading files, you may experience low throughput rates. Many factors affect throughput. If your throughput is perpetually low then check the following: Conflicts on your system may cause the throughput to drop. This may be caused by a shared COM port, IRQ setting, or a memory conflict with another device or application. Documentation for the various devices on your system may give you the configuration setup for that device, which in turn may identify the conflict. A diagnostic program, such as Microsoft Diagnostics, may also identify a possible memory conflict. You may contact your hardware vendor for further assistance. If the modem driver that is used is not the correct one, throughput may suffer. Drivers are mostly model specific. Wherever possible use the driver provided by the Modem manufacturer for the particular model. If the communications software you are using is not properly configured, throughput rates may decrease. You may want to consult the software manufacturer or check the software documentation for the proper setup. Flow control, file transfer protocol, and baud rate are three settings which may affect throughput. Improper flow control settings in the software and the modem may also cause throughput rates to decease. The modems are set for a default of hardware flow control or RTS/CTS flow control. This is the recommended setting for both the software and the modem. In case of Internal modems, the flow control should be set to software (Xon/Xoff) Disk compression programs will also slow down the throughput rate. If possible, change the download directory of your communications software to an uncompressed portion of the drive. Multi-tasking while transferring files can affect throughput rates. Try to lesson the amount of applications running in the background while transferring files. You may also try to dedicate the CPU during transfers if the software has a setting to do so. If you have a slow processor on your computer, you might want to look into upgrading, If this is not a possibility, dedicating the CPU may be the best option. Running to many programs at the same time in the background will also hamper throughput. If the programs are not essential to your system, you may choose to unload them altogether. If your telephone cord is too long, throughput may decrease. A seven foot cord is a good length, if the line is excessively long, the computer and the phone jack may need to be closer together. Also, if the cord is old, try using a newer one. If you have an 8250 UART, you can upgrade to a 16550 UART by purchasing a high-speed serial card. If you are still unable to determine the factor that is causing low throughput, try the following change to your system configuration as a work around. · Increase your baudrate, if it is at 19200 increase it to 38400, if it is at 38400 increase it to 57600 etc. 2. When I access certain web sites, multiple windows open up. This clutters my view and makes my browsing speed slow. Can I prevent this ? Yes. These windows are usually opened by taking advantage of the Javascript capablilty of your browser. You may prevent this by disabling Javascript in your browser. Disabling Javascript: In Netscape Navigator, click Edit - Preferences - Advanced, and then uncheck Enable JavaScript. In Internet Explorer, Click Tools - Internet Options - Security - Custom Level, and select the disable radio button under Active Scripting. 3. Can I use a third-party Internet software over Satyam? Yes, you may use any third party Internet Software that your operating system supports. Yet, for registration and renewal, a Java Script enabled browser is required. Currently, Technical Support for Netscape and other Third Party Software Products is minimally based. The bulk of our customers and our system programs are Microsoft-based and require the majority of our Technical Specialty Resources. However, this is not to say that you, as a customer, cannot or should not utilize Netscape or a Third Party Software Program for your Internet functions. What this does mean, to you as a SatyamOnline customer, is that we will provide you with the same information, pertaining to your ability to connect to our systems, as we would to any other customer utilizing only the Microsoft-based products that we do extensively support. When and if problems occur, with these programs, it will be up to you, the user, to seek technical assistance from either the product manufacturer or another third-party technical support organization. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may cause to some, but due to the fact that there are so many and various types of Internet-based software products on the market, it is impossible for our Technical Support Staff to maintain proficiency with all of them. Thus, we are dedicated to in-depth support of only the software packages that we release as part of our own service programs.

1. What do I need to connect to Satyam? The minimum recommended configuration
to use SatyamOnline is:
Your SatyamOnline CD is designed to work only with the Operating Systems we recommend. But, you may use any other Operating System to access the Internet using your SatyamOnline account. You will need a dialer, and other Software that your Operating System supports. Technical support for access using other Operating Systems will be minimally based. 2. I have installed Satyam. Can I connect to other ISP's? You may connect to any number of ISP's you wish to. If you connect to multiple ISP's ensure that under the Network icon of Control Panel, the disable DNS is selected. The DNS for each ISP may be specified in the corresponding dial up networking connection. 3. When I log on, my modem says Connected at 57600 (or 115200). Am I really connected at that speed ? I only have a 33.6 kbps modem! The connect message that your modem reports can be one of two things. The first, known as the DCE ('Data Communicating Equipment') speed, reports the actual connection speed between the two modems across the phone lines: the maximum speed available with current modem technology is 57600. However, your modem could instead be reporting the DTE ('terminal equipment') speed, the speed at which your computer is sending information to your modem. The DTE speed can be up to 115200 on most machines. If you want your modem to report the true connection speed (i.e., the DCE speed), on most modems it is as simple as adding the string W2 to your modem's initialization string. If that is not the case, consult your modem's manual for details 4. My modem is a 56kbps modem, but it connects at a lower speed (such as 33.6 or 26.4). Why is it so ? The term "56kbps modem" is a bit misleading. What would be a more appropriate name is "56 kbps capable modem". The maximum speed of your modem is a combination of many factors. They are: the quality of the wiring of the home connection, the distance between you and your telephone exchange, the kind of switching equipment your phone company has you connected to, the way the phone company is routing your call, the data transfer speed between your computer and your modem, the modem driver, your system configuration etc. The newer modems which support 56kbps are no exception: while they are capable of handling speeds up to 56 kbps under optimal line conditions, the majority of phone lines will only be able to make a connection less than that speed. 5.My modem disconnects from SatyamOnline frequently. Why is this happening ? Disconnects can be one of the most frustrating problems you can encounter while online. Infrequent disconnects (once a month or so) are just a part of being on the Internet. Frequent disconnects can frazzle your nerves. Please remember that if you are having connection problems, it is our desire to help you solve them. However, there are a multitude of things that can cause disconnects and troubleshooting can take some time and lots of patience. If they occur often, here's a checklist: Phone Line Noise While voice communication and faxes can handle the occasional hum, static or line crossover, any of those can cause your modem connection to hang-up. The first step is to pick up a phone handset connected to the same line as your modem, check for dial-tone and then punch in just one number in order to break the dial-tone. Any sound, other than complete silence can cause connection problems. If you detect any noise, it's time for a call to your telephone service provider. Premises Wiring/Fax Software Faulty wiring, bad phone jacks and plugs, phone line splitters, too many phones or other devices in parallel can cause problems. Disconnect every other equipment from the phone line (fax machines, answering machines, etc), keep the phone line at least three inches away from electrical cords, extension cords, printer cables, etc. Inductance from electrical lines and radio transmitters wreaks havoc with phone lines. Fax software will sometimes "take control" of the modem when you try to use the modem to access the Internet. Disabling the fax software during your Internet online time will clear up this interference. When you are through with your Internet session, you can re-enable your fax software. Weather Changes Temperature changes and wet/dry fluctuations can result in connection problems. Changes in temperature can cause changes in the phone cables (expansion, retraction), altering the quality of the line temporarily. If you normally maintain connection but suddenly have problems after a recent rainstorm, it is probably a result of water on/in the lines resulting in hum, static and cross talk. Excessive Retraining Modem retrains during the session (this is not the same as "speed-shifting", the normal fallback and forward changes of data transfer speed.) Retraining is a process by which two connected modems keep adjusting without disconnecting. It is the same thing that occurs in the first few seconds when the two connecting modems are trying to "handshake." This procedure can be initiated by either modem when unsatisfactory signal reception is detected and no data is transferred. The intended result is to improve the receiver's signal processing by decreasing the data rate (poor data signal quality) or by increasing the data rate (good data signal quality). Most modem manufacturers have designed their modems to disconnect after 12 retrain sequences. Incorrect speed setting Your modem speed is set incorrectly. Here is a short list of settings.
Don't set your 33.6 to 115200 in Windows. It just can't handle it well. Call Waiting If Call waiting is enabled in your telephone line, it must be disabled in your configuration settings if you don't want to be disconnected when you are online and a second call comes in. This is usually done by adding a certain string before the access number. Contact the local telephone service provider for the string. If you are still unable to determine the factor that is causing your line to drop frequently, try the following changes to your system configuration as a work around.
